Embezzlement is what is known as a white-collar crime. It occurs when someone claims items or money illegally. The employee, in this case the perpetrator of the crime, may serve jail time, be put on probation, or be required to perform community service. There are also professional penalties, such as loss of license or loss of employment.

Community service is usually included as one of the conditions of suspension. The judge will set the number of hours to be served, which also can vary depending on the severity of the crime.
The length of the prison sentence may fluctuate greatly from state to state. However, harsher sentences and penalties are often given for thefts of more valuable property or greater amounts of money. States may adjust sentences based on the specific types of property that are stolen: there can be greater penalties in one state for taking a type of item, but another state may give a lesser sentence for that same theft.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that when an employee enters into a working relationship with a company, it is understood that the property they use within the company, whether it’s money or an actual piece of property, should only be used for the benefit of the company.
