Indeed, I am not sure if you’ve been following the news, and the pharmaceutical industry but The Food and Drug Administration has levied several fines, and given many warnings to drug makers for poor quality in manufacturing. This should raise red flags for everyone, especially considering that the US taxpayer is paying for all these drugs for people on Medicare and Medicaid plans. With the New Healthcare Insurance Law; a.k.a. ObamaCare, the pharmaceutical companies with their lobbyists had gotten all they had hoped for.
There were some major cases recently, and if you do not recall what these are, let me refresh your memory; Genzyme, GlaxoSmithCline, McNeil, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer for instance have all been under scrutiny, some have had recalls, and some have paid fines from the FDA. If you’d like to understand more let me recommend a couple of very good articles for you to read; by Jonathan D. Rockoff titled; “Drug Manufacturing Men Being after Questions of Quality” and another one by Alisa Mundy “FDA Scientist Attacks Avandia Safety.” Both of those articles appeared in the Wall Street Journal in 2010.
Now then, I’d like to bring up another point which these articles did not address, and that is one with the ever increasing manufacturing of pharmaceutical drugs for use in US consumer markets being manufactured now in China. If the FDA is having problems with manufacturing of drugs in the United States in our own factories, where things are pretty carefully done, then we have a real problem, knowing what we know about quality control in China.
You see, the Food and Drug Administration only has one office in China, they can’t possibly go to all these places that make drugs, and all the places that produce food to be shipped to the United States. Do you remember the poison in the toothpaste, the fish protein, and the pet food? Do you remember the chemicals in the drywall, or the lead in the paint on toys?
Sure, one could argue that we get a lower price for our drugs, if the drug companies can utilize the factory floor a.k.a. China to produce them. However, if we have already noted that there are problems with vitamin supplements made in China often enough, and we already know many of the major drug companies have paid fines, or been warned for lackadaisical quality control, then we are absolute fools to think that these drug companies are going to solve the quality control issues by manufacturing out of sight and out of mind in a country half-way around the world where they will undergo very little scrutiny at all, if any. That’s absolutely crazy, please consider all this.
