When you hear people talking about their health, it’s common to focus on eating well and being active, but being healthy doesn’t stop here. There are lots of vital organs and systems you need to protect, including your eyes. Your eyes are incredibly important and valuable. They give you the ability to see the world in all its glory and to communicate with others and appreciate what’s around you. We often take our sight for granted and don’t give eye care a second thought. If you’re keen to do more to protect your eyes, here are some simple tips to take on board.

Book an eye test
When was the last time you had your eyes tested? When you’re young, you tend to have regular tests, but as you grow older, it’s common to go for years without paying optometrists a visit. The trouble with avoiding routine eye tests is that it can take a long time for your vision to change or deteriorate. This means that you may not notice any difference until your symptoms become advanced. You may experience headaches as a result of straining to read, for example.
If you go for an eye test on a regular basis, any minor issues can be corrected before they become more serious. If your vision has got slightly worse, your optometrist will be able to adjust your lenses to make it easier for you to see.
Wear sunglasses
It’s summer, and although this is wonderful for many reasons, it’s not always good news for your eyes. Exposure to sunlight can damage your eyes. If you are going out in the sun, make sure you wear sunglasses and avoid staring straight at the sun. Check that the lenses are strong enough to withstand UV rays and buy shades that meet safety standards.
Use eye care software
If you have a desk job or you spend hours every day staring at a screen, look into buying eye care software. Spending long periods of time in front of a computer can cause your eyes to become tired, and you may find that you’re more prone to headaches. If you do use a monitor or a laptop, eye care software can help to protect your eyes by neutralizing blue light emitted by the screen.
It’s also advisable to take regular breaks, stay hydrated, and to look away from the screen and stare into the distance every 10-20 minutes. It’s best to set your desk up so that the monitor is slightly below eye level.
Take advice on board
It’s amazing how many people choose to ignore advice from professionals and try and soldier on without wearing contact lenses or glasses. If you’ve been advised to wear glasses for reading or driving or you need them all the time, make sure you wear them.
We often take our health for granted, and we don’t realize how important it is until it’s too late. If you’re keen to preserve your eyesight and protect your eyes for as long as possible, follow these simple steps.
